As the decade starts to wrap up I figured it would be fun to piece together a list of what I feel are 20 of the best movies that came out from the 2010’s.
The way I put this together was based on factors like how did the film influence me, how they changed the respected genres and also what the film meant for society. This was a hard list to put together and is excluding some of my favorites over the past decade like It Follows and The VVitch but at the end of the day while they changed the horror genre over the past decade other films left bigger impacts like how The Conjuring created its own universe.
Let’s take a look at my Top 20 list. Hopefully you have seen most if not all of these films but let’s dive into my ranking:
20.) Logan (2017)
19.) Argo (2012)
18.) Bridesmaids (2011)
17.) Baby Driver (2017)
16.) Django Unchained (2012)
15.) The Babadook (2014)
14.) Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 (2014)
13.) Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
12.) Moneyball (2011)
11.) John Wick (2014)
10.) The Conjuring (2013)
9.) Train to Busan (2016)
8.) Toy Story 3 (2010)
7.) The Social Network (2010)
6.) Inside Out (2015)
5.) Get Out (2017)
4.) Black Panther (2018)
3.) Inception (2010)
2.) Hereditary (2018)
1.) Paddington (2015)
Yes, I will die on the Paddington hill and that’s fine. It was truly one of the overall best films I saw this past decade. It is also one of the most joyful films when most films won’t be so upbeat, the acting is on point from everyone and the direction is perfect.
I know some might be asking “Where is Avengers?” or other super hero films and while they where important moments I felt the better films included Logan, Black Panther and GOTG Vol. 1. One was a classic western, one is bigger than any super hero film in so many ways and the other was possibly Marvel Studios best film. Pixar had a nice showing on my list as two films made my Top 10. Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending (until they landed the ending again with Toy Story 4 but we all remember the farewell in 3) and Inside Out might have been Pixars best film. Telling that story in such a simple way that kids can grasp the emotional weight while also telling it in a way that parents and grown ups get emotional (Bing Bong anyone?) while others on this list didn’t win Best Picture are extremely influential. The Social Network now looks like a warning about the dangers of Facebook & social media, John Wick changed action films, and I can go on but I’d love to know what is your favorite film of the past decade?
