Back before the Summer Box Office season began I laid out a list of what I felt would be the Top 10 Films of Summer 2019. As we head into Labor Day Weekend the summer box office season is officially over. Yes, we have a couple new films coming out this weekend but as far as big studio releases go we are done. This means we have a pretty good idea of the final numbers (that is unless something crazy happens) that we can look back and see how we did.
My picks back in April can be found here: https://q101online.com/what-the-flick/summer-box-office-predicition/.
Here is how the Summer 2019 Box Office actually unfolded:
1.) Avengers: Endgame
2.) The Lion King
3.) Toy Story 4
4.) Spider-Man: Far From Home
5.) Aladdin
6.) John Wick Chapter 3
7.) Secret Life of Pets 2
8.) Fast & Furious: Presents Hobbs & Shaw
9.) Detective Pikachu
10.) Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood
Yes, I nailed the top 5 films. Obviously including Avengers:Endgame was a given that would be king of the summer but Toy Story 4 was a bold pick after a 10 year hiatus in a franchise that felt concluded. But as you all found out they did have a fourth story to tell that has now grossed more than the third film in the franchise did. Spider-Man got the Endgame boost which helped it beat out Aladdin and it Globally Grossed over $1B for the first time in that franchises history.
When it comes to the bottom five I was a little off. I really underestimated the Keanu-sance that we are in the middle of as John Wick 3 (it was on my dark horse list but still…) made the most money in that franchises history. It was one of the rare times a film franchise keeps grossing more each time out when usually sequels see less returns. I also didn’t think audiences would gravitate towards Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu but they did and good word of mouth helped bring people in. It is also the highest grossing video game movie of all time now and despite my love of Quentin Tarantino I left him off my list which was a mistake. Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood not only was a fantastic movie and one of his best so far but it really pulled in audiences and became only the second original movie this year that grossed over $100M at the box office domestically. The other film not an Intellectual Property that grossed over $100M domestically was “Us” back in March. I mention the original aspect because I went with a stronger IP on my top 10 list with Men In Black but even the power of Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson couldn’t save that one and Godzilla I thought would do big numbers but it ended up way under performing.
I did get 6 out of 10 correct and 7 of my 10 picks did make the list. Did you make any summer box office predictions? How did your picks turn out?
