GOLDEN GLOBES RECAP

Last night the first award show of the season took place. Andy Samberg (Brooklyn 99) & Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) took the stage and provided a rather entertaining night. (I am a little upset we never got a Lonely Island rap with Sandra and Andy singing about the movies nominated.)

As far as the awards went the night was actually a bit of a surprise. If you went into the award season like myself and figured “A Star Is Born” would walk away with every award you’d be wrong. Even an award like Best Actress in a Drama didn’t go to Lady Gaga for “A Star is Born” which seemed like the odds on favorite. Instead the sole award they won was for Best Original Song with “Shallow” but we will dive back into the movie side in a moment.

The Golden Globes isn’t just all about the movies but also awards the best in Television and last night we saw “The Americans” (FX) finally get its recognization in its final year. Netflix had a nice night winning Best Musical or Comedy Series “The Kominsky Method” and Netflix would also see big wins on the movie side. “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” (FX) took home Best Actor, Miniseries or TV Movie as well as well as Best Miniseries or TV Movie. While Rachel Brosnahan was Best Actress, Musical or Comedy Series for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and Best Actor in a Drama went to Richard Madden “Bodyguard” and then a cool moment when Host Sandra Oh, won Best Actress for “Killing Eve” bringing a standing ovation from her dad who was in the audience.

Back on the movie side of things as I mentioned Netflix would see some big wins as Mexico’s “Roma” which is a big award season favorite took home Best Foreign-Language Film (it wasn’t nominated for Best Drama because the Foreign Press has a rule that a Foreign Film can’t win that award…Yes, the best film at the Golden Globes voted on by the Foreign Press can’t be a foreign film.) it also went on to win for Best Director: Alfonso Cuaron, which was another moment of shock with Bradley Cooper not winning for ASIB. Green Book had a great night taking home Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor & Best Musical or Comedy (Yes, this seems like a weird category to have it in but again this award show is usually weird) while Regina King scored a Best Supporting Actress win for “If Beale Street Could Talk” and Christian Bale would thank Satan in his acceptance speech for Best Actor in Musical or Comedy in “Vice” and Olivia Colman won Best Actress in Musical or Comedy for “The Favourite” while “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” took home Best Animated Feature Film (I called this the best Spider-Man movie made). The final three awards where the most shocking of the night. Remember when I mentioned how “A Star is Born” lost big well it was this moment of the night when Rami Malek won Best Actor in a Drama for his amazing performance in “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Best Actress went to the most authentic moment of the night when an extremely shocked Glenn Close took the stage for her role in “The Wife” (Again, this was Lady Gaga’s award according to everyone) and then the evening closed with Best Drama going to “Bohemian Rhapsody” which I can go into a whole thing about how that movie wasn’t even the sixth best out of the films nominated in Best Musical or Comedy and Best Drama but at the end of the day I didn’t have a vote. Still “Bohemian Rhapsody” was a surprise for everyone involved and watching at home.

We also saw an incredible moment when Carold Burnett took the stage to accept the Inaugural Carol Burnett Award and Jeff Bridges channelled The Dude when accepting the Cecil C. DeMille Award.

This was a pretty good award show filled with some very fun moments, real emotions and some big surprises. Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh did a good job hosting the show and getting us through the first night of awards in Hollywood.

What did you think of the Golden Globes? I’d love to hear your comments below.
