What The Flick

Captain Marvel Review

The MCU, is back with it’s long awaited “Captain Marvel” starring Oscar winner Brie Larson as Carol Danvers and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury. This is the latest link in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s now, 21-film-and counting chain of story telling.

Unlike other origin stories we’re introduced to our would-be captain, on a mission with her fellow Kree warriors. We are taken right into the action and the ride that Indie Directors Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck take us on is an exciting, vibrant and at times poignant with it’s message sci-fi flick. Not soon after this mission our hero finds herself falling to earth where she soon meets a young Nick Fury (Jackson). We then are taken on a journey following Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes (watch out Thanos!) as Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. All of this happens in 1995, which really helps Captain Marvel stand out in terms of the other MCU films.

The 90’s play a big part in the fun of this film as you are taken on a nostalgic train ride. Everything from memories about dial up internet and Blockbusters (Yes, kids this was a thing we used to deal with in the 90’s before WIFI and VOD existed). You might find yourself singing a long to some of the songs along the way also as this is a 90’s kids dream playlist.

The rest of this film is filled out with an all-star cast including the talents of Jude Law, Clark Gregg back as young Phil Caulson, Lashana Lynch as Maria Rambeau in an incredible performance, and Anette Bening (LEGEND!!!) as Supreme Intelligence. Of course we get our Stan Lee cameo which depending on what type of a 90’s kid you are might be one of the funniest moments of the movie. (Kids look up Kevin Smith)

“Captain Marvel” is a fun sci-fi wonder that’s full of excitement. Brie Larson brings Carol Davers to life in a fun but sublime way. She screams charisma even when simply blowing her hair out of her face. This film focuses on it’s best assets which is the report between Jackson and Larson. Not to mention Goose (The Cat) who will steal the show and provide some of the best moments in the film. While the film offers up a big ending it also feels restrained from a lot of its predecessors in the MCU but in a good way. Trading in the over the top fight in the sky for a more subdued version. It’s a welcome breath of fresh air in the MCU and fits perfectly into the bigger picture.
