Awesome Con Returns to Washington This Weekend

Washington D.C. was overrun by movie, comic book, tv, and video game fans this weekend when “Awesome Con” returned after nearly a two year hiatus.

After having to cancel last year due to Covid-19, the Walter E. Washington Convention Center doors opened to fans ready to celebrate the things in pop culture we all love.

This years lineup included the blockbuster stars of “Back to the Future” with Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd coming to town. They arrived Saturday for photo ops, signings and eventually an afternoon with “Back to the Future” on Sunday. Which was a perfect closing moment for this years Con as a packed main room was brought too their foot giving MJF a standing ovation after a very raw emotional moment when asked “what these comic con events mean to him?”

Star Wars fans had a treat as well with Carl Weathers being in town, Star Trek fans like myself had the chance to meet Captain Kirk and Sulu as both William Shatner and George Takei came to town. (I did all of Shatner’s events and had the chance to meet him and get a photo with him which was a childhood dream come true.)

Lord of the Rings fans got their fix when Billy Boyd took to the main stage and discussed Middle Earth.

Other famous guests that arrived included two more I was very excited to meet this weekend in Christina Ricci who was one of my first celebrity crushes and “Napoleon Dynamite” himself Jon Heder. I did get a chance to ask Jon Heder a question at his panel and made sure it was in regards to the “Tremors” movie franchise in which he starred in the 7th film (yes, 7 FILMS!) of that franchise.

It was only the celebrity guests that made this weekend an exciting one in our nations capital as many vendors took over the floor. I scored some great movie posters and other swag.

The 2019 Awesome Con drew 72,000 and I would venture to say this years had a large turnout as well. Friday seemed a little slow but Saturday & Sunday was a packed house and everyone followed the Covid protocols in place with masks, social distancing and more.

If you missed out on this years Awesome Con don’t worry because they’ve already announced next year will take place June 3rd-5th at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

If you attended Awesome Con this past year I’m curious what did you think of the event?
