Looking for a good scare, but not sure where to start? The good news is that you have some great streaming options on both Netflix and Amazon Prime as you are self quarantined and practicing social distancing.
I have pieced together four horror films from each streaming site that you might want to check out:
AMAZON PRIME: Midsommar – Director Ari Aster is one of those up-and-coming horror directors who you can count on to deliver a mastery of emotional destruction. This sun-drenched folk horror will engulf you in a grief, anxiety filled nightmare. Florence Pugh delivers a breakout performance that was very much over looked by the Academy last year. Also while you are at it give his first film Hereditary a watch. It’s also available on prime right now and was my favorite movie of 2018.
AMAZON PRIME: The Descent – Neil Marshall pre Game of Thrones directing fame delivered an instant tense thriller classic. This claustrophobic filled spelunking film about friends trying to heal and mend friendships until Marshall unleashes his monsters on these friends.
AMAZON PRIME: A Quiet Place – John Krasinski shows his love for Steven Spielberg and Amblin with beautiful set-pieces, big heart and alien creatures. The tensions in tis film will leave you on the edge of your seat.
AMAZON PRIMES: Night of the Living Dead – George A. Romero’s classic film about “ghouls” not zombies is the film that created the zombie crazy we know them for. Blank, thoughtless creatures who lumber around and crazy human flesh.
NETFLIX: Candyman – Bernard Rose delivered this classic back in 1992 and now would be a perfect time to catch the classic staring Tony Todd, before the 2020 remake debuts (hopefully in June). Simple and terrifying is this slasher film about standing in front of the mirror and calling out Candyman’s name 5 times, so you can summon him and his spirting kills you.
NETFLIX: Green Room – Jeremy Saulnier delivers this fingernail-chomping thriller that traps an unarmed metal band inside a hive of white supremacists. Watch as all parties scramble after the band witnesses something they shouldn’t. Patrick Stewart is chilling, and the late great Anton Yelchin delivers a fantastic performance (as always).
NETFLIX: The Invitation – Karyn Kusama who directed the underated Jennifer’s Body shows off again why she is a horror queen. This high-end tension centered around a dinner party gone wrong. And that’s it. That’s all I’ll tell you because its great and unfolds at a perfect pace that when the thread begins to unravel you’ll be left speechless.
NETFLIX: The Evil Dead – Sam Raimi is a genius and this film shows all of that genius at work. Along with Bruce Campbell creating the perfect horror iconic character in Ash Williams this classic is terrifying, gory, inventive and the best cabin in the woods film you will ever watch.
There you have it. 8 horror films that should hold you over during these crazy times. And as an honorable mention you can also watch on Netflix Train to Busan if you don’t mind subtitles. This Zombie film was the highest grossing Asian film that year and took over the box office in its homeland of South Korea and one of my favorite zombie films in recent memory.
