STERLING VA: (Rocktown Now) – A wide stretch of the Mid‑Atlantic is bracing for slippery conditions today as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST, according to the National Weather Service.
The advisory covers north‑central and western Maryland, northwest Virginia, and eastern West Virginia, including communities across Washington, Allegany, Shenandoah, Frederick (VA), Warren, Clarke, Hampshire, Morgan, Berkeley, Jefferson, Hardy, and parts of Grant and Mineral counties.
Forecasters say residents should expect mixed precipitation, with ice totals ranging from a light glaze to around one‑tenth of an inch. Localized higher amounts are possible along the Pennsylvania border. Sleet accumulation could reach up to half an inch in some areas.
Meteorologists warn that the storm will likely move in between late morning and mid‑afternoon, beginning as sleet or freezing rain. Through the afternoon and evening, freezing rain is expected to remain the dominant type of precipitation, though areas near and south of Route 50 may warm enough to see plain rain instead.
Temperatures are forecast to gradually rise from south to north, allowing more locations to transition to rain later in the day. However, some communities may stay near the freezing mark, prolonging the threat of icy surfaces into the night.
Drivers are urged to use caution, as slippery roads may affect travel throughout the day and could significantly impact the Friday evening commute.
