Severe thunderstorms possible this afternoon and evening

HARRISONBURG VA: (Rocktown Now) – A significant and widespread severe weather outbreak is expected to develop from late this afternoon through tonight, affecting a large portion of the United States. Forecasters warn that this storm system has the potential to produce numerous severe thunderstorms and multiple tornadoes as it tracks from the Midwest across much of the eastern United States, stretching from New York down through Florida. This setup is being driven by a powerful clash of warm, moisture-rich air from the Gulf of Mexico and strong upper-level winds—conditions that can support long-lasting storms capable of producing dangerous weather.
While the most intense and widespread storm activity is expected to occur across the central and southern states, the Shenandoah Valley is still at risk for impactful weather as the system moves eastward. Our area may experience strong to severe thunderstorms, especially later tonight, as the main line of storms progresses through the region. These storms could bring periods of heavy rainfall, reduced visibility, and strong, gusty winds that may cause scattered power outages or downed tree limbs.
According to the National Weather Service, the greatest likelihood for severe thunderstorms in the Shenandoah Valley will occur between 2 PM and 7 PM today, though storm activity may continue into the late evening and overnight hours. These thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph, large hail, and a few tornadoes, some of which could be strong if conditions become more favorable. Even isolated tornadoes within a fast-moving line of storms can develop quickly, so residents are encouraged to stay alert, monitor warnings, and ensure they have reliable ways to receive weather updates—especially after dark.
Overall, while our region is not expected to see the worst of this multi-state outbreak, the potential for impactful severe weather remains real.
