HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Unofficial results are showing that incumbents Mayor Deanna Reed and Vice Mayor Laura Dent are projected to win the most votes in the primary election for Harrisonburg City Council.
With eight of nine voting precincts reporting as of 9 p.m., Reed is in the number one spot with 804 votes – more than 25 percent of the overall turnout. Dent, who is running for a second term, follows closely behind with 718 votes.
Reed, who is seeking her third term as Mayor of Harrisonburg, told Rocktown Now Tuesday evening that she is humbled by the projected win. Until November, though, she plans to continue her mayoral duties as usual.
“I’m gonna keep working for the citizens of Harrisonburg like I have for the past seven and a half years” Reed said. “That’s what I signed up for, and I love serving my community, and hopefully the voters will speak up in November and I can continue doing the job that I love doing.”
Council member Chris Jones, however, is projected to net 363 votes – the least of all five candidates, therefore disqualifying him as the Democratic candidate in the November General Election. Reed lamented Jones’ loss in the primary, praising his decade-long tenure on council.
“Councilman Jones has done a lot of great work – we’ve done great work together,” Reed said. “I’m disappointed he won’t be coming back but, ultimately, it’s up to the voters.”
Newcomer Nasser Alsaadun – who owns the Middle Eastern restaurant and store Babylon, is projected to have secured the third spot with 655 votes. Kathy Beery, a former state senate candidate came in fourth with 655 votes.
This is a developing story, and will be updated when the final election results are posted.
