AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – A date for a potential plea hearing has been set for the twin brother of Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith, who was accused of trying to kill two deputies late last year before the charges were amended.

According to online records, Ronald William Smith is expected to enter a plea in the case on July 24 in Augusta County General District Court.

Smith, 41, is now facing five charges in connection with an incident the day after Christmas. Authorities claim that he stole a semi-truck from the sheriff’s property and led deputies on a chase.

During a recent hearing, two counts of attempted aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer were reduced to attempted malicious assault of said officers.

Smith remains in custody at Middle River Regional Jail.
