HARRISONBURG, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison women’s basketball shot 34-of-67 (.507) from the field and poured in 48 points in the paint to down Queens, 87-38, inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center on Sunday night.
The Dukes (2-1) recorded a facility record 12 blocks and scored 30 points off 21 Royals’ (2-1) turnovers. Eleven JMU players saw game action, with the bench adding 37 points in the win.
Kylie Marshall came off the bench to lead all players in scoring (18) and rebounding (7 – Career High), shooting 4-of-5 (.800) from three-point range in 19 minutes of action. Peyton McDaniel finished with 15 points, and tied her career high with three assists.
Freshman Grace McDonough reached double figures with 12 points to go along with two blocks and two steals. Angela Williams registered 11 points, six rebounds and tied her career high with three blocks in 18 minutes off the bench.
Bree Robinson dished out a career-high nine assists and produced three steals, while Zakiya Stephenson added five helpers and three steals in the win.
For Queens, Brea Franks paced the Royals with nine points as a reserve. Brenae Jones-Grant was Queens’ top rebounder with six boards.
How It Happened
First Quarter – JMU 18, Queens 10
• Free throws from Jermany Mapp gave the Royals a 6-5 edge at the 6:25 mark – the last point in the game at which they would lead.
• Marshall knocked down back-to-back threes to make it 18-10 at the end of the period.
Second Quarter – JMU 40, Queens 24
• McDaniel (8) and McDonough (6) led the charge for the Dukes, shooting a combined 6-for-9 (.667) in the quarter.
• At the half, JMU shot an efficient 17-of-31 (.548) from the field and had as many points in the paint (24) as Queens did total.
Third Quarter – JMU 59, Queens 28
• The Dukes began to distance themselves further, limiting Queens to 1-of-15 (.067) from the floor while six JMU players found nylon for a 59-28 lead after three.
Fourth Quarter – JMU 87, Queens 38
• Marshall scored eight of her 18 points in the final frame, as the Dukes poured in 28 points on 5-of-9 (.556) from three to seal the deal.
• JMU scored 16 points off Queens’ 12 turnovers in the fourth.
Game Notes
• JMU held an advantage in points in the paint (48-16), rebounds (46-42), bench points (37-14) and points off turnovers (30-5).
• The Dukes’ 21 assists were the most for the program since also dishing out 21 against Gardner-Webb last season in a 102-69 win over Gardner-Webb on Nov. 17.
• JMU registered a dozen blocks for the first time since swatting away 13 shots against College of Charleston on Jan. 19, 2020.
• The Dukes shot 8-of-20 (.400) from three against Queens tonight. In 2024-25, JMU only made eight or more shots from beyond the arc seven times.
