COLLEGE PARK, Md. (JMU Athletics) – A steady offensive effort from No.3 Maryland allowed the Terps to put away James Madison lacrosse, 13-6, at SECU Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Jordan Peterson led the scoring for the Dukes (2-4), netting two goals on the afternoon. Payton Root scored a goal and dished out two assists to lead the team. The defensive side was held down by Maddie Weybrecht, who caused a turnover and scooped five ground balls.

Abigail Beattie received the start in the cage, making eight saves, her most in a road game this season.

Maryland’s (7-0) Kristen Shanahan led the Terps with six goals and an assist, as Lauren Lapointe added a hat-trick and an assist of her own. JJ Suriano handled goalie duties for the Terps, making 10 saves with a .625 save percentage.

How it Happened

First Quarter: James Madison 2, Maryland 5
• It was all Maryland early, building a 3-0 lead by the 8:30 mark of the first.
• The Dukes responded with two unanswered goals from Peterson and Root; however, the Terps struck back with two goals of their own to regain their three-point advantage.
Second Quarter: James Madison 3, Maryland 8
• Maryland scored the first two of the quarter over eight minutes apart, leading 7-2 with just over three minutes to play in the half.
• JMU’s lone goal of the quarter came at the hands of Aly Yee-Jenkins to close the gap to four, but the Terps responded with 10 seconds remaining to reclaim a five-point lead.
Third Quarter: James Madison 4, Maryland 11
• Maryland added three more to its total this period and held JMU to only one score on five shots taken.
• The Terps controlled the circle in the third, leading 4-1 in draw controls over the Dukes in the period.
Fourth Quarter: James Madison 6, Maryland 13
• The Dukes put one on the board early with a strike from Brianna Mennella 20 seconds into the quarter to move the score to 11-5.
• JMU managed to add one more score in the match but could not overcome its deficit to move to 2-4 on the season.
