PENDLETOWN COUNTY WV: (Rocktown Now) – Emergency crews from West Virginia and Virginia completed a complex nighttime rescue Friday after a hiker slipped on ice along the High Knob Trail and fell down the West Virginia side of Shenandoah Mountain.

Pendleton County E‑911 received the initial report at 6:12 p.m. Responders located an injured female hiker who had slid off the snow‑ and ice‑covered trail and down a steep slope. According to officials, the rescue required “several hundred feet of rope,” multiple personnel, and two specialized UTVs to reach and extract the patient.

By 11:30 p.m., rescuers had brought the woman to a waiting Pendleton County Emergency rescue ambulance. She was being transported to Rockingham Memorial Hospital in Harrisonburg. No information was released regarding the extent of her injuries.

Pendleton County officials commended the multi‑agency response, noting the critical support provided by Rockingham County Fire Rescue and the Clover Hill Volunteer Fire Department, along with personnel from South Fork VFD and the PCER Tactical Skills Team.

Authorities said the incident serves as a reminder of hazardous winter conditions on mountain trails, where packed snow and ice continue to create dangerous footing.
