HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – Harrisonburg’s two high schools will re-open today after closing Monday in response to threats of violence on social media.
Harrisonburg City Public Schools Communications Coordinator Kelly Lineweaver confirmed the decision in an email to Harrisonburg High School and Rocktown High School parents, as well as news media, Monday evening.
The message is as follows:
“This is a joint statement from Harrisonburg Police Department and HCPS. In cooperation with HPD, Harrisonburg High School and Rocktown High School will re-open, September 17. We understand that recent social media threats have raised concerns. Please rest assured that we take every threat very seriously and HPD is committed to investigating and holding accountable those responsible, while always protecting our school campuses. Our priority is the safety of our students and staff. In partnership with HPD, we have a dedicated security plan for tomorrow to provide an enhanced safe transition back to the classroom. Mental health professionals will also be available to support our students as needed.”
In a letter sent to the HCPS community earlier on Monday, Superintendent Dr. Michael Richards said the threat circulated social media messaging app SnapChat, and specifically identified HHS. A law enforcement investigation that identified several students between both HHS and RHS prompted the decision to close both high schools.
