Elevated Wildfire Risk Across Virginia, Maryland, D.C., and Eastern West Virginia

STERLING VA: (Rocktown Now) – Elevated risk of wildfires is in effect today for northern and central Virginia, Washington, D.C., the eastern West Virginia Panhandle, and parts of central and western Maryland, officials warned.

Dry vegetation, low relative humidity ranging from 20 to 30 percent, gusty southerly winds of 20 to 25 miles per hour, and unseasonably warm temperatures in the 80s are combining to create conditions favorable for the rapid spread of fires.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to take extra precautions to prevent accidental ignitions. Cigarette butts, matches, and other flammable materials should be disposed of properly in designated containers. People are also advised to use caution when operating equipment that could generate sparks and to avoid parking vehicles on dry grass.

Dry grasses, dead leaves, and other forest litter can ignite easily under these conditions and allow fires to spread quickly, officials said.

Residents are reminded to follow all local burn bans and restrictions currently in place. Additional information on wildfire danger, burn regulations, and fire prevention efforts is available through state forestry and environmental protection agencies.
