HARRISONBURG VA (Rocktown Now) — The National Weather Service has issued a warning for elevated fire danger across northern portions of the Shenandoah Valley and into eastern West Virginia this afternoon. The advisory is in effect from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
Forecasters say a combination of dry conditions and gusty winds will create an increased risk for the rapid spread of wildfires. Fuel moisture levels are hovering around 9 to 10 percent, while relative humidity is expected to remain between 30 and 38 percent. Winds will range from 15 to 20 mph, with frequent gusts reaching 30 mph.
Officials urge residents and visitors to take extra precautions:

Dispose of cigarettes, matches, and other flammable items properly. avoid operating equipment that could produce sparks and keep vehicles off dry grass.

Dry grasses, fallen leaves, and other debris can ignite easily under these conditions. Authorities also remind the public to follow all local burn bans currently in effect.
For more information on wildfire prevention and burn restrictions, visit your state forestry or environmental protection website. Virginia residents can find details at the Virginia Department of Forestry website.
