CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison baseball knocked off No. 13 Virginia for the first time since 2007, scoring the winning run on a wild pitch in the 10th inning on Tuesday night for an 8-7 win at Disharoon Park.
The Dukes improved to 16-15 and took down the Hoos for the first time since April 25, 2007 when they won 7-6 in 14 innings for the program’s highest ranked win as UVA was ranked third in the country. The Cavaliers fell to 24-10.
Redshirt sophomore Clay Thompson and sophomore Reece Moody each went 3-for-4, with Thompson adding two runs scored and stolen bases and Moody recording a run scored, a double, two RBI and three stolen bases.
On the mound, redshirt sophomore Luke McGrath (2-1) earned the win after tossing an inning of relief and striking out two. Junior Griffin Madden earned his first career save with a scoreless 10th inning, striking out one and allowing a hit.

First Inning
Virginia struck first by scoring a run on a groundout after putting its first two runners on.
Fourth Inning
A three-run homer from Noah Murray extended the Hoos’ lead to four runs.
Fifth Inning
In an interesting inning, the Dukes brought themselves within one by scoring three runs without recording a hit after sending nine batters to the plate. An error allowed the Dukes to score their first run, before sophomore Reece Moody and junior Ike Schmidly each drew back-to-back-bases-loaded walks.
Seventh Inning
JMU tied and then took the lead in the seventh, using an infield single from Moody plus an error to score the fourth run to tie the game. Another fielding error on a ball hit by Schmidly brought in a run to give the Dukes the lead and freshman Conner Worth capped the scoring with a two-run single for a 7-4 lead.
Eighth Inning
UVA brought itself within two after a two-run base hit brought in an unearned run to make it 7-5.
Ninth Inning
Joe Tiroly tied the game for the Hoos, putting a 1-2 pitch into the home bullpen to tie the game at seven.
10th Inning
Back-to-back singles from Thompson and Moody were followed by a walk from junior Ben Barrow to load the bases for the Dukes. A wild pitch allowed a run to come in, putting the Dukes ahead 8-7.
The Hoos loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but a strikeout and a flyout to center field allowed the Dukes to hold on for the win.
Game Notes
• The Dukes earned their highest ranked win since taking down No. 3 Arkansas on Feb. 18, 2024. That win against Arkansas tied the 2007 win against Virginia as the highest ranked win in program history.
• JMU knocked off a ranked team for the first time since defeating No. 20 Troy on April 11 last season.
• Clay Thompson extended his hit streak to 10 games, as he reached on five of six plate appearances with three singles and two walks.
• JMU eclipsed 100 stolen bases on the season, stealing seven bases for its fourth game this season of seven or more stolen bases.
• Reece Moody tied a career high in hits, RBI and stolen bases.
• The Dukes snapped a 17-game winless streak and 13-game losing streak against Virginia.

The Dukes remain on the road and head to Atlanta on April 10-12 to take on Georgia State, with Friday’s opener slated for 6 p.m.
