HARRISONBURG, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The City of Harrisonburg was awarded funding and is now going to design improvements to reduce traffic congestion and improve traveler safety along the Port Republic Road corridor.

The Public Works department will host an open house next Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. in the council chambers of City Hall. Harrisonburg Public Works Director Tom Hartman said in a news release that residents will learn about the project and have an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on the proposed designs.

“We have funding secured to make these sections of Port Republic safer for our community members and visitors to
travel,” Harrisonburg Public Works Director Tom Hartman said. “With the review of crash data and through careful
evaluation, we understand there are opportunities to reduce crash conflicts along this corridor by implementing specific
improvements, improvements that we look forward to sharing with the community at this open house.”

The project includes improvements on two different sections of Port Republic Road, including one that extends the eastbound left-turn lane at Bluestone Drive to provide more space for vehicles waiting in line at the intersection. It will also install a signal at Bradley Drive, with associated left turn lanes on Port Republic Road.
