Bridgewater Women’s Soccer falls in OT to No. 1 seed W&L in ODAC Semifinals

LEXINGTON, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College women’s soccer team fell 3-2 to No. 9 Washington and Lee Wednesday evening.

The Basics
Score: Bridgewater 2, Washington and Lee 3
Records: Bridgewater (15-5, 7-3 ODAC), Washington and Lee (16-2-1, 10-0 ODAC)

How It Happened
• Washington and Lee took control early, putting up five shot attempts in the opening 12 minutes. Bridgewater’s first shot attempt came in the 16th minute from Lyric Birkley. It was on target, but it was stopped by the WLU keeper.
• The Generals mustered six shots over the following 15 minutes before BC took possession.
• Brianna Curro put the Eagles on the board in the 36th minute off a set piece. Birkley sent a pass to Kendall Garza, who was headed down the left side of the field. Garza found Curro inside the box, who tapped the ball into the back of the net to give Bridgewater a 1-0 advantage.
• W&L quickly followed with a goal of their own. Maren Brown managed to get a shot past Erinn Lockard to even the score.
• The Generals added to their tally early in the second half. A scramble off a set piece led to Sarah Zimmerman finding the back of the net. She was assisted by Bryn Bissinger.
• The Generals continued to press the Eagles defense, but Lockard and the BC backline kept the Generals from increasing their lead.
• The Eagles scored their second goal of the match in the 69th minute. Brianna Curro sent a forward pass to Sophia Phillips. Phillips found Garza in the box, allowing for a one-on-one between Garza and the WLU keeper. Garza found the back of the net for the equalizing goal.
• In the waning minutes of the second half, the Generals rang four shots but were unable to capitalize.
• In the first overtime period, Washington and Lee controlled possession for most of the period. The Generals had five shot attempts, and only managed to put one on target.
• In the 99th minute, Sarah Zimmerman found the back of the net to end the match, advancing the Generals to the ODAC championship match.

Match Notes
• The Eagles scored two goals on the Generals. This was the most goals allowed by the Generals this season.
• Brianna Curro recorded her 10th assist of the season on the goal in the 69th minute.
• Erinn Lockard recorded seven saves. This brings her to 67 saves on the season.
• Lyric Birkley increased her career assists number to 29, and her career points number to 115, both program records. Birkley still sits tied for second in career goals.
