HARRISONBURG, Va. (EMU Athletics) – EMU Field Hockey welcomed in Randolph Macon on Wednesday, taking on the Yellow Jackets in a midweek ODAC matchup.
RMC scored at least two goals in each period, despite Gracyn Arruda snagging a career-high 30 saves, en route to a 9-0 lead.
Records: EMU 0-16, 0-6 ODAC | Randolph Macon 9-8, 3-5 ODAC
Highlights
• Arruda picked up four saves early, keeping Randolph Macon off the board. But after Natalie Moul’s shot was blocked, Alaina McCoy’s pass found Mackenzie Wunderlich, who found the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Macon added to their lead and lead 2-0 after one. Along with Arruda, Terranie Bennett added to her ODAC-leading defensive total with two more on back-to-back shots, to help the defense.
• The Yellow Jackets picked up their third goal less than a minute and a half into the second quarter and put goal number four on the board at the 18:25 mark. One more goal put RMC ahead 5-0 at the break, with Arruda racking up seven saves in the quarter.
• After RMC scored two more goals in the third, the Royals best offensive opportunity came in the 42nd minute. Zofeya Maldonado brought the ball forward into the Macon zone. She fired a shot on cage that was saved, but the deflection came right back to her. She put another shot on net, but a defensive save from Irish Azama kept EMU off the board.
• The Yellow Jackets added their final two goals of the game four and 12 minutes into the fourth quarter. Arruda continued to put up big save numbers, and Nala Nichols and Bennett added defensive saves, but the Royals offense couldn’t get going as RMC picked up the win.
