HARRISONBURG, Va. — A new measure meant to slow drivers down through a Harrisonburg construction site is now in place.

According to public works officials, speed cameras were installed Wednesday at either end of the work zone on East Market Street, between Carlton Street and Linda Lane.

The speed limit through that zone is 25 miles per hour, but spokesperson Brittany Clem-Hott said that a one-week study conducted during work hours showed more than 22-thousand drivers traveling between 37 and 49 miles per hour.

More than 600 drivers were clocked at speeds over 50, and a dozen more hit speeds of 60 miles per hour.

A 60-day grace period is in effect, when drivers caught speeding will receive a warning letter in the mail from Harrisonburg Police.

Once that period expires, speeders will be subject to a 100-dollar fine.
