Governor Glenn Youngkin has ordered that the U-S flag and the Virginia flag will be flown at half-staff on all local, state and federal buildings and grounds in the Commonwealth of Virginia in memory and respect of Brodnax County Police Chief Joseph Edward Carey Senior, who was killed in the line of duty.

Youngkin ordered the flags to be lowered at sunrise on Thursday and remain at half-staff until sunset.

Carey died last Friday when he was struck by a pickup while tending to the remains of an animal that had been struck in the road near the border of Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties. He was 66.
