LURAY, Va – A Rockingham County man received the maximum sentence for killing a child in November of 2019.

Ian Zimmerman of Elkton was sentenced to 35 years in prison this week during a hearing in Page County Circuit Court.

A jury had convicted the 25-year-old Zimmerman on two charges last September. Judge Clarke Ritchie then sentenced him to 25 years on the murder charge and 10 years on a count of child abuse and neglect.

Prosecutors said Zimmerman was watching his girlfriend’s 10 month-old-son when the child sustained numerous injuries including swelling of the brain and bleeding on the spinal cord.

Zimmerman claimed the child sustained the injuries rolling off a couch, but the state medical examiner testified the injuries were not accidental.
