Custer Sentenced to 25 Years For His Role in Rockingham County Murder

HARRISONBURG, Va – A Verona man will spend 25 years in prison for his role in the fatal beating of a Rockingham County woman.

Adrian Custer had pleaded guilty to first degree murder back on August 13, 2019. in a plea deal with prosecutors.

He had been charged with capital murder in connection with the death of Margarene Caplinger in September of 2017.

A circuit court judge sentenced the 24-year-old Custer to 40 years in prison Tuesday with 15 of those years suspended.

As part of the deal, Custer testified against Brent Smallwood, who was sentenced to life in prison in March of last year for his part in the murder that took place in a home on Trinity Church Road in the Melrose area.
