WINCHESTER, Va. –  A man from nearby Baker, West Virginia is dead following a race car crash.

The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office reports 48-year old James Billmeyer was killed Saturday on the opening night of the 2022 season at Winchester Speedway.

Investigators say that the force of the crash and rollover were enough to defeat all the safety equipment that the car was outfitted with.

Billmeyer was involved in the U-CAR division of short track racing Saturday night when they say his car collided with another racer, hit a wall and then went into a barrel roll, finally landing upside down.

Despite the efforts of emergency personnel at the track, Billmeyer died at the scene.
