Bridgewater Women’s Soccer blanks Randolph-Macon on Wednesday, 1-0

ASHLAND, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College women’s soccer team ended their regular season campaign with a road victory over Randolph-Macon Wednesday evening.

Records: Bridgewater (14-4, 7-3 ODAC), Randolph-Macon (9-7-2, 7-3 ODAC)

How it Happened
• Both teams traded shots in the opening ten minutes. RMC had the first opportunity in the 7th minute, when Ariel Farmer put a shot on frame. It was stopped by Erinn Lockard. Sophia Phillips had a shot attempt of her own two minutes later, but it was off the mark. Farmer followed with another shot attempt that went out right.
• Randolph-Macon created a few shot attempts in the following minutes, but were unable to get on the board. Lyric Birkley took her first shot attempt of the evening in the 23rd minute, but missed wide. Birkley put a shot on target in the 34th minute, but it was stopped by the RMC keeper. Cassandra Villafan put a couple shots on target, but was not able to make it past the keeper.
• In the 43rd minute, RMC keeper Erin Morris fouled Lucy Larson inside the box, leading to a penalty kick, taken by Birkley. Birkley sent the penalty shot into the bottom right corner of the goal, scoring the lone goal of the match.
• To begin the second half, Bridgewater continued to bring the offensive pressure, as Birkley ripped four shot attempts in the first ten minutes of the second half. Kendall farza, Brianna Curro, and Phillips ripped shots of their own, but were unable to add to the tally.
• In the 71st minute, Lockard faced a couple of shots from RMC. One missed the mark, while she was able to stop the other.
• Birkley put the final shot on target for the Eagles in the 83rd minute. She ripped a shot to the bottom left corner, but it was stopped by the RMC keeper.
Match Notes
• With her goal towards the end of the first half, Lyric Birkley recorded her 113th career point, making her the program leader in career points. She also scored her 43rd career goal, putting her two away from tying the top mark in program history.
• Bridgewater won the shot battle 20-10. The Eagles took 12 shot attempts in the second half compared to RMC’s five. BC also put nine shots on target in the match compared to RMC’s three.
• BC clinched the fourth seed in the ODAC tournament with this win. They will host Randolph-Macon in the first round of the tournament.

What’s Next?
Bridgewater claimed the fourth seed in the ODAC tournament and will host Randolph-Macon. Tournament play begins Saturday, Nov, 1.
